CLEANER PRODUCTION
Cleaner production initiatives
have been successfully undertaken in the textiles, food processing and
edible oil and soap sectors. 32 factories were audited and 21 demonstration
projects implemented at a cost of L.E 1.6 million and an average
pay back of 6 month. Examples of interventions include water and energy
conservation, ecolabelling for textile exports, sulphur black dyeing, combined
scour-bleach processing, oil and fats recovery, HACCP and recovery of cheese
whey.
Over the next few years SEAM
will focus on low cost cleaner production opportunities in micro, small
and medium size enterprises in the four Governorates. Around 100 audits
and 30 demonstration projects will be undertaken in priority sectors including
metal foundries, furniture, food processing, textiles, brick works and
auto repairs. Projects should enhance efficiency, reduce pollution, yield
financial savings and improved the environment for surrounding communities.
