Water:
Three main sources of water are feeding Zaranik Protected Area:

  1. Salt water from the Mediterranean through 3 natural inlets (Zaranik, Abu Salah and Tofaha) and these inlets depend on the natural weather (current, waves directions, sedimentation, erosions…).

  2. Water coming from the Mediterranean through the artificial inlet no (2) for Lake Bardawil, which is located at the western Protectorate of Zaranik. This inlet is about 300 m wide and 4-6 m deep.

  3. Underground water from rainfall in the northern Plataeau of El-Maghara Mountain to the north, a detailed study for evaluation of the catchment areas (Quantity and quality) is needed.

Hydrology: Annual rainfall and ground water are the main fresh water sources.
Rainfall: 80-100 mm (mean annual); peaks in December & January.
