Introduction:
Zaranik became recognized as a wetland of international importance for migratory water birds during the 1970s. Since then, it has gained worldwide fame and has been the focus of attention for researchers and conservationists. Zaranik and its environs represent a unique pristine example of Mediterranean coastal habitats, encompassing a wide variety of ecosystems. In response to the significance of the site, Egypt declared Zaranik a Protected Area in 1985 by Prime Ministerial Decree under Law 102 of 1983, concerning Protected Areas. Zaranik Protected Area is one example of Egypt's growing commitment to improving environmental quality.
