Pollution Management
This site provides access to information on the
Bank's ongoing work on Pollution Management. This
emphasizes integrated environmental management,
rather than just pollution control -- using a
broad mix of incentives and pressures to achieve
sustainable environmental improvements.

Greening Industry: New
Roles for Communities, Markets and Governments.
The book is described in the NIPR page as
follows: "Rebutting the conventional wisdom
that developing countries lack the infrastructure
and the resources to control pollution,
this study shows how a new combination of
information-intensive, citizen-empowering
strategies can produce impressive results.
With the cost of collecting and disseminating
information falling, this is a timely and
tremendously exciting book." (Tom Teitenberg).

Working Papers
|
The Policy Research Working
Paper Series disseminates the findings
of work in progress to encourage the exchange
of ideas about development issues. An objective
of the series is to get the findings out
quickly, even if the presentations are less
than fully polished. The papers carry the
names of the authors and should be used
and cited accordingly. The working papers
can be located in the address: http://www.worldbank.org/nipr/work_paper/

INTEGRATED POLLUTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL BUREAU
The European IPPC Bureau exists to catalyst an
exchange of technical information on best available
techniques under the IPPC Directive 96/61/EC and
to create reference documents (BREFs) .IPPC will
apply to a wide range of industrial activities
and the objective of the information exchange
exercise is to assist the efficient implementation
of the directive across the European Union.

THE U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
(EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) was created by Executive Order in 1970. The mission
of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is to protect
human health and to safeguard the natural environment
- air, water, and land - upon which life depends. The
Internet services of EPA are very wide and EPA can be
an excellent source of information.

The most important key issues for
Pollution Prevention in the EPA site are
|
The Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics
(OPPT)
The mission of the Office
of Pollution Prevention and Toxics focuses on
the following four components:Promoting pollution
prevention as the guiding principle for controlling
industrial pollution; Promoting safer chemicals
through a combination of regulatory and voluntary
efforts; Promoting risk reduction so as to minimize
exposure to existing substances such as lead,
asbestos, dioxin, and polychlorinated biphenyls;
and Promoting public understanding of risks by
providing understandable, accessible and complete
information on chemical risks to the broadest
audience possible.

|
The EPA's Office of Compliance: EPA Sector Notebooks
The EPA's Office of Compliance
has developed a series of profiles or notebooks
containing information on selected major industries.
These notebooks, which focus on key indicators
that holistically present air, water, and land
pollutant release data, have been thoroughly reviewed
by experts from both inside and outside the EPA.
The notebooks can be found in:

Projects
The OECD Environment Directorate launched a Project
on Environmental Requirements
for Industrial Permitting. The project
involved three distinct phases: (i) a survey of
permitting legislation, regulations and practices
in OECD countries; (ii) the preparation of case
studies of four industrial sectors (pulp and paper
with country profiles, metal finishing, oil refining,
and iron and steel); and (iii) an international
workshop on environmental permitting of industrial
facilities which was held in May 1996. A summary
of the publication can be read in the address:

ORGANISATION (UNIDO)
UNIDO has been working with governments,
business associations and individual companies to solve
industrial problems and equip them to help themselves.
As the world has changed, so also has UNIDO. Throughout
its existence, the Organisation has been developing,
advocating and implementing innovative routes to industrial
