Incinerators program Implemented through The EPF Grant Program

One of the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) goals is to contribute in solving critical environmental problems within the Egyptian community. One of these problems is represented in hazardous medical wastes which results from hospitals and medical institutions. These wastes cause serious damages as a result of the unsafe disposal and unsafe reuse by:
  1. Corrupted people who recycle these medical wastes and reuse them in manufacturing toys for children.
  2. Re-wrapping of used syringes to be used one more time which cause threats on peoples' lives.
From this perspective, the EPF addressed this problem according to its available resources by stating in its operational plan for 2004/2005 the provision of 15 incinerators for safe disposal of hazardous medical wastes. The incinerators are be distributes on hospitals under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Population based on the following criteria:
  1. The compliance of the incinerator location with the environmental conditions stated by law no.4 for 1994.
  2. The magnitude of the environmental problem.
  3. The amount of medical wastes.
Based on the above measures, 2 incinerators were provided for El Sharkeia and El Qalubeia governorates. One incinerator was provided for the following governorates: Alexandria, Assiut, El Menia, Cairo, El Behira, El Dakahleia, El Wadi El Gedid , Kafr El Shikh, El Garbeya, Ismaellia and El Mounufeya.

Coordination was carried out with the Ministry of Health and Population to establish a training program for the hospitals employees on the methods used for segregating hazardous medical wastes from the source.

Results achieved after providing 15 incinerators for the safe disposal of hazardous medical wastes:

First: Environmental Advantages

  • Reduction in the pollution percentage resulting from hazardous medical wastes.
  • Increase in the safety rates concerned with hazardous medical wastes disposal.
Second: Economical Advantages

  • Decrease in the spent costs on patients affected by pollution.
Third: Social Advantages

  • Improve of individuals' health due to the reduction of pollution causes.
