AEIN Activities in Egypt

Phase 1 Activities

1. Review and provide comprehensive comments on the AEIN implementation guidelines.

2. Undertake an assessment, using guidelines provided by UNEP, of the status of Environment information systems and networking activities in the country, including existing institutional capacities and identify capacity as well as awareness raising needs.

3. Organize a national start-up workshop involving all the key stakeholders in environment information management in the country to get consensus on AEIN implementation at the national level. The implementation guidelines provided by UNEP will be the key resource material.

4. Prepare a national AEIN implementation plan and submit it to the Center for Environment and development for Arab Region & Develop (CEDARE), the UNEP Collaborating Centre in the region, for peer review.

5. Establish a national implementation structure for AEIN consisting of a national node (or secretariat) supported by technical committees and working groups in accordance with the guidelines provided.

6. Establish and provide a comprehensive database (using Microsoft Access or similar tools) of national and or international institutions which collect environmental data in Egypt.

7. Establish a national website for environmental information, with links to other websites of core environmental data producers and also ensure that the information in the database mentioned above (6) is also available on the website.

8. Provide a brief report on the state and process of environmental assessment and reporting in the country.

9. Produce a National Environment Outlook report.

10. Document the impacts, lessons (positive and negative) learnt at every stage of AEIN and AEO implementation at the national level.

Phase 2 Activities

1. Undertake to fill the data gaps (City, sub-national and national) identified during the assessment done by your institution during the pilot phase of AEIN, of the status of Environment information systems (EIS); environmental data and information needs, availability and gaps in Egypt.

2. Further to the above, and using the AEO-Environment Information System toolkit developed within the AEIN framework, populate the database with the findings of the assessment and data gaps filled using format(s) agreed upon by the AEO Data Working Group (AEO-DWG).

3. Collate and aggregate data identified within the AEIN process and during the national integrated environment assessment and reporting process and prepare a comprehensive compendium of environmental data (with clear details of data gaps if any) for Egypt. The compendium will contain statistics, satellite data, etc.
 
4. Prepare an inventory and a comprehensive listing on the environmental data and indicators for integrated environmental assessment and reporting in Egypt.

5. Strengthen the national implementation structure for AEIN consisting of a national node (or secretariat) supported by technical committees and working groups in accordance with the guidelines provided by UNEP and ensure that national level environment information network strategy, concepts, and implementation in Egypt are taken on board and internalized in your institutional structure to facilitate sustainability and ownership of the networking concepts.

6. Identify two (2) sites in Egypt where there has been significant environmental change(s) over the last 20-30 years for inclusion into the Atlas of Africa's Changing Environment. Egypt will also provide some ground photos, maps, satellite images if any. Further to this prepare write-up/narrative/story of 200 words on what and why these changes are/have taken place.

7. Prepare one (1) national fact sheet (using illustration such as graphics and the satellite data, etc) on AEIN implementation, major environmental issues, trends, emerging environmental issues etc in Egypt, for distribution at strategic meetings, conferences, etc based on the findings of environmental assessment and reporting process in Egypt.

8. Link with the Africa Network of Environment Journalists (ANEJ) focal point in Egypt and working closely with the national chapter of ANEJ, facilitate the work of ANEJ in Egypt to track major environmental issues, trends and emerging issues in Egypt and to prepare two (2) electronic newsletters on major environmental issues, trends and emerging issues in Egypt.

9. Based on the findings of the integrated environmental assessment and reporting in Egypt, prepare a country profile for Egypt.

10. Update the national website for environmental information and publish the electronic versions of, listing of the environmental data and indicators; the environmental data compendium; fact sheets and national newsletter on major environmental issues, emerging environmental issues in Egypt.

11. Collect data and information during AEIN implementation and prepare a comprehensive report for submission to UNEP on the lessons learnt, results and impact of both the pilot phase and well as the AEIN implementation process in Egypt during this period.
