Technology transfer of climate-friendly technologies for both adaptation and mitigation is essential for Egypt to face the challenges posed by climate change. Capacity building on vulnerability assessments, climate change impact assessments across all sectors, and environmental management are badly needed. It is within the national interest to establish and strengthen nation-wide systematic observation and monitoring networks for sea level and climate, and provide training in climate change modeling.
|
It is critical to focus future efforts on issues of national priority. Assessment of vulnerability to climate change should be developed for the:
Water resources
Agricultural sector
Delta coastal areas
Industrial sector, with a focus on new industrial cities
Impacts on human health
Coral reefs in the Red Sea
Oases
|
Future national adaptation proposals include:
Assessment of available options for coastal zones
Survey of vulnerable sectors (water, agriculture, and coastal zone) for available options, including projected outcomes and costs
Risk assessment and management of the industrial sector as an option to mitigate potential impacts from climate change
Increased awareness of climate change impacts
Study of institutional capabilities for adaptation
|
|
As the focal point for climate change in Egypt, the Climate Change Unit (CCU) of EEAAs mandate entails the management of all national and international climate change activities, including the clean development mechanism (CDM). Egypt supports projects under the clean development mechanism as a new source of international capital investment flow to Egypt, and therefore, a national strategy for CDM implementation is underway.
|
|
The energy sector, along with the industrial, transportation, waste management, agricultural, and land use sectors, are the major GHG emitters in Egypt. They are considered main targets for CDM projects.
