The Environmental Information Systems

We actually live in the information era, therefore, a database for the Environmental Non Governmental Organizations was developed in addition to a database of the companies awarded ISO 14000. Moreover, an EIA system and the public complaints database were developed as well a database concerning the solid wastes, garbage, and agricultural wastes. It is represented in the following steps:

- Forming a database for the hazardous substances. Continuing the first phase of the Egyptian information system comes to the second phase for managing and assessing the risk resulting from the hazardous substances. This is the stage of transferring the system to Web based application to avoid the problems in the communication net to connect a group of ministries through the Internet.

- The hazardous substances information and management system provided a guiding model to form a contingency plan within the establishment, the warning system, the responsibilities of the contingency center, moving within the location, the procedures of closing, a trial of plan implementation, and a national perspective on the hazardous substances management. Egypt is considered one of the countries that realized the national perspective of chemicals before year 2000. This look includes twelve chapters and two annexes and updating of information through the concerned groups.

- Ensuring the entrance to the main server through the use of the Firewall program as the Firewall hardware was set on the router of connecting private computers and servers to the internal net of the Internet. This is to ensure the safety of the machines from outer intrusion especially the safety of the private servers on the Internet site and the machine's email server. It is necessary to establish an electronic library system, training database and administrative and financial electronic system.

- The use of the geographical information system to construct a special system for the solid wastes (agricultural- industrial) was applied on: agricultural wastes- industrial- garbage- health care- construction and demolishing wastes- sewage purification wastes. Moreover, the role of coordination between the various groups to solve the problems of these kinds of waste was assured.

- Redesigning the Ministry and the Agency's Internet site in correlation with Look IT Company is realized to facilitate the use and the speed of presentation based on the new techniques.

- Establishing a system of receiving the environmental inquiries and complaints on the Internet.

- Developing a special database for the non governmental organizations and defining their activities in each governorate.

- Updating and generating a second edition for the geographical information system (GIS) (atlas) that is used by the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs.

- Establishing of a remote sensing unit for the different environmental applications such as development of the protected areas, monitoring the coastal zones as well as the follow up on the pollution resulted from oil spill, identifying of urban areas, and establishment of green belts after specifying the sources of air pollution.
